The Capitol Middle School garden began in September 2011. The garden could not have been possible without the many community partners working together: Better Baton Rouge, Star Hill Church, Louisiana Delta Service Corps, Lamar Corporation, Slow Food Baton Rouge, City Year, Diplomas Now, Neighbors Federal Credit Union, LSU Ag Center, CPEX, Clegg’s Nursery, Marcello’s Restaurant, as well as countless community members.
Slow Food Baton Rouge’s two Louisiana Delta Service Corps volunteers, Grant and Allison Guidroz, have been vital for the implementation of the garden. Grant and Allison designed the garden, organized community volunteers for the build days, and are working with the Home Living teacher at Capitol to fully integrate the garden into her classroom – planting, harvesting, preparing and eating the fresh garden produce.
